From Dafni, the main port of arrival from Ouranoupoli, visitors continue on to Karyes, further inland on the peninsula. Though neither is a monastery, both settlements play an important role in life on the Holy Mountain.

Karyes

Karyes is the administrative centre of Mount Athos and its largest settlement. It has held this role since the tenth century, and today it is the seat of the institutions through which the twenty monasteries govern the Holy Mountain together. The 2021 census recorded 135 inhabitants.

The Holy Community, made up of twenty representatives, one from each monastery, meets here. Its executive body, the Holy Epistasia, has four members and changes every year, so that each monastery takes part once in every five-year cycle. Its chair, the Protepistatis, is always the representative of one of the five monasteries at the head of the Athonite order of precedence: Megisti Lavra, Vatopedi, Iviron, Hilandar or Dionysiou.

The Greek state is represented at Karyes by the Civil Administrator of Mount Athos, appointed on the recommendation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The monasteries’ representatives live in residences known as konakia.

The Protaton

At the heart of Karyes stands the Protaton, the church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, a tenth-century foundation. Its frescoes, painted around 1300, are attributed to Manuel Panselinos and are counted among the finest works of Byzantine painting.

The Protaton also houses the icon of the Mother of God known as Axion Estin. According to tradition, on the night of 10–11 June 982 the Archangel Gabriel taught the hymn “Axion Estin” before this icon, in a small cell in nearby Kapsala — today the Holy Cell of Axion Estin, a dependency of Pantokrator Monastery.

Around Karyes

Koutloumousiou Monastery lies a few hundred metres to the south-east, and the Skete of Saint Andrew, known as Serai, about 500 metres to the north-west. The surrounding hillsides are home to many monastic cells, among them the Holy Cell of Axion Estin, the Cell of Saint Nicholas at Bourazeri and Panagouda Cell.

Karyes also has the everyday services of a small town: a post office, a police station, a health centre and a pharmacy, bakeries and grocery shops, a few restaurants and places offering rooms, and shops selling icons, books and monastic products. It is the hub of the local minibus network, with connections to Dafni and to many of the monasteries.

The Atlas lists Karyes at approximately 370 metres above sea level. It is one of the main hubs of the walking network. You can explore routes to and from Karyes in the Route Planner.

Dafni

Dafni (also written Daphni) is the main port of Mount Athos, on the south-western coast of the peninsula. Ferries and speedboats connect it with Ouranoupoli, making it an arrival point for many visitors to the Holy Mountain.

The settlement is small, but it has a police station, a customs office, a coastguard station, a post office and a few shops. From Dafni a road climbs over the central ridge at Stavros to Karyes and is served by buses and minibuses, while local boats continue along the south-western coast to the harbours of the monasteries and sketes, as far as Kafsokalyvia.

The Atlas includes walking routes from Dafni to Xeropotamou Monastery (about 2.2 km), Panteleimonos Monastery (about 5.1 km), Simonopetra Monastery (about 7.7 km) and Karyes (about 8–11 km, depending on the route). You can compare the available routes in the Route Planner.

Before you travel

Entry to Mount Athos requires a valid diamonitirion. Ferry, bus and minibus timetables can change. Please confirm the latest schedules and transport arrangements before you travel.

Karyes and Dafni on Mount Athos For most pilgrims, Dafni and Karyes are key stops on the journey to Mount Athos.
